  • analyze how the structure of a text contributes to meaning and aesthetic impact

  • analyze multiple interpretations of a story in a variety of types of media

  • compare and contrast how two or more texts from the same period treat similar themes and topics

Speaking and Listening

  • initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative conversations

  • work with peers to promote civil, democratic discussions, setting goals and deadlines

  • respond thoughtfully and respectfully to diverse perspectives, synthesizing comments, claims and evidence provided on all sides

Writing

  • write a precise, knowledgeable argument that includes a claim, opposing claims and logically sequenced supporting evidence

  • write informative pieces including narration of historical events, procedures/experiments, or technical processes

  • write an analysis of literature including relevant, supporting details and examples

  • produce clear and coherent writing that is appropriate to task, purpose and audience

  • use technology to produce, publish and revise writing in response to ongoing feedback

  • conduct research projects to answer a question, drawing on information from multiple print and digital sources

  • gather relevant information from multiple authoritative sources, assess the strengths and limitations of the sources, and integrate information to share findings, avoiding plagiarism

Language

  • ​demonstrate command of grammar conventions and usage when writing or speaking

  • demonstrate command in spelling and punctuation when writing

  • apply the knowledge that usage is a matter of convention and may change over time

  • resolve issues of complex usage by consulting references

  • use language that expresses ideas precisely and concisely

  • apply knowledge of language and how it functions in different contexts
