Grade 4

Foundational Skills

  • read multisyllable words, applying knowledge of syllabication patterns, roots and affixes

  • read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension

  • read with purpose and understanding

  • use context to confirm or correct word recognition during reading

Reading

  • summarize texts and determine a main idea or theme supported by evidence

  • refer to details and examples in text to support an inference

  • describe the overall structure in parts of texts and explain how the parts are connected

  • determine the meaning of general and academic words

  • compare/contrast themes, points of view and key details presented in text

Writing/Language

  • write opinion pieces, such as persuasive and literary essays

  • write narratives, such as personal narrative and realistic fiction 

  • write informational pieces, based on expertise and research

  • strengthen writing through editing and revising

  • use precise vocabulary to inform or explain about a topic

  • demonstrate command of grammar conventions and usage when writing or speaking

  •  demonstrate command in spelling, punctuation and grammar when writing

Speaking and Listening

  • have meaningful conversations and contribute to others' ideas

  • determine main ideas and supporting ideas of a text read orally

  • provide reasons that are supported by facts and details

  • pose and respond to questions to clarify or develop a topic being discussed

  • report on a topic accurately, using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive detail

  • differentiate between contexts that call for formal versus informal voice and language
