Site Based on the CT Core Standards, some of the skills students will be developing in Grade 2 include...

Foundational Skills

  • read short and long vowels for common words in text

  • know common prefixes and suffixes

  • decode two-syllable words

  • read with purpose and understanding

  • read with a rate and accuracy that supports comprehension

  • use context to confirm or correct words as they read

Reading

  • retell stories or texts and determine the central message or lesson

  • describe how words and phrases give specific meaning to text

  • describe how characters respond to challenges

  • describe the overall structure of a text

  • identify the topic of a multiparagraph text

Writing/Language

  • write opinions about the books read and give reasons to support them

  • write narrative and fictional stories that follow a story structure

  • write opinion pieces, like reviews

  • write informational texts to teach others

  • use complete sentences when writing with appropriate spelling, punctuation and grammar

Speaking and Listening

  • have meaningful conversations and build on others' ideas

  • describe key details about a story read aloud or told orally

  • ask and answer questions to seek help or gain a deeper understanding of the topic being discussed

  • speak in complete ideas appropriate to a task or situation
