Site Based on the CCS, some of the skills students will be developing in Grade 5 include...

Foundational Skills

  • read multisyllable words, applying knowledge of syllabication patterns, roots and affixes

  • read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension

  • read with purpose and understanding

  • use context to confirm or correct word recognition during reading

Writing/Language

  • write opinion pieces such as a research-based argument essay

  • write narratives such as personal narratives and memoirs

  • write informational pieces such as feature articles and research reports

  • strengthen writing through editing and revising

  • use precise vocabulary to inform or explain about a topic

  • demonstrate command of grammar conventions and usage when writing or speaking

  •  demonstrate command of spelling and punctuation when writing

Reading

  • summarize texts and determine two or more main ideas or themes in text, supported by evidence

  • quote accurately when referring to details and examples in text to support an inference

  • compare/contrast the overall structure in two or more texts

  • determine the meaning of general and academic words in a text

  • integrate information from several texts on the same topic

Speaking and Listening

  • have meaningful conversations and contribute to others' ideas

  • determine main ideas and supporting ideas of a text read orally

  • summarize information presented orally

  • pose and respond to questions to clarify or develop a topic being discussed

  • report on a topic , sequencing ideas logically, using relevant facts and descriptive detail

  • adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks
